Amplats opens its legal process against Strikers

The world's top platinum producer, Anglo American Platinum, has started disciplinary action including possible dismissal against workers taking part in an illegal strike in South Africa, the company said on Thursday. The company, a unit of global mining giant Anglo American, also said that attendance at its four mines near Rustenburg, 120 km (70 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, remained below 20 percent despite repeated threats to get tough. A wave of wildcat strikes is roiling South Africa's mining sector despite the end of an illegal six-week stoppage at platinum producer Lonmin in which 46 people were killed. Amplats' chief executive Chris Griffith said on Wednesday the company would start making good on threats to sack workers if they did not report for duty within 24 hours.

“Despite repeatedly urging our employees to come back to work, attendance at our Rustenburg operations remains low,” he said. “We have been left with no choice but to initiate disciplinary action, which could lead to dismissals.”
Rustenburg labour activist and community representative Mametlwe Sebei struck a defiant tone, saying striking Amplats workers were not intimidated by the ultimatum.
“No amount of threats are going to move our workers from their demands,” he told Reuters.
The demands include an increase in a minimum monthly wage to 12,500 rand ($1,500), more than double that currently earned by those at the bottom of the pay scale.
When rival Impala Platinum fired 17,000 illegal strikers in the same area in January, it unleashed a wave of violence that closed its Rustenburg operation, the world's largest platinum mine, for 6 weeks. Three people were killed.

South Africa: the mining crisis upsets the social model

The violent crisis which shakes the South African mines shows that one part of workers doesn’t trust traditional syndicates anymore, until now a guarantee of certain social peace in spite the deep inequalities of the society. The high increasing of the salary has been done this week after a long period of negotiation between the government and the syndicates which claim more money in their salary and is the cause of 46 deaths and has also destruct buildings.
Since this movement, a lot of observatories see it as an invitation for others mining site in pushing them to launch others strikes of the same kind. It’s already the case since some days with Anglo American Gold and platinum producers and Gold Fields, where the strikers feel encouraged and motivated by what is considered as a victory to their colleagues in Marikana. But as a government, they fear anarchy. Since long-time, in South Africa, social relations are formalised, representative syndicate having the exclusivity of negotiation with employees, through a process extremely beaconed.
In the past, syndicates were affirmed as one of force of opposition most active against the apartheid era.

Summit of the Non –Aligned Movement

Syria; Nothing special
United Nation has held a meeting in Teheran from the 26th to the 31st of August with a presentation of some presidents and ministers of foreign affaires and 15 members of the National Security Council concerning the humanitarian Syrian Crisis. Unfortunately, this summit was achieved without any resolutions; therefore the occidental power has threatened the president Bachar al Assad of the military intervention. The adoption of a resolution seems impossible due to the fact of the lack of cooperation from Russian and China which protect their interest. Until when is this situation going to be like that? When we realise that actually a generation is dying by bombardments and attacks. Face in this situation which chokes the human conscience, we just have to believe that everything will be fine as soon as possible.
